The Post Doc researcher Alan Lugarini and the CERNN coordinator Professor Admilson have just published the paper titled “The isolated effect of yield stress in viscoplastic turbulent flow” in the renowned journal Physics of Fluids. It was selected as Editor’s Pick of its Issue! The paper presents direct numerical simulations of Bingham fluid undergoing a turbulent flow.
Using lattice Boltzmann method, a numerical scheme was developed to represent the viscosity singularity without artifacts, producing a more accurate representation of the yield surfaces. Results showed that this ideal Bingham fluid has unyielded portions of material traveling along
the turbulent flow in the core region. These unyielded spots do not disappear quickly, but rather have a significant lifetime. These insights have important implications for the design of fluids for hydraulic transport.
